
If you've ever bought 5.11 clothing or tactical gear, you've likely seen the term "ripstop." So what is ripstop, and why is it important?
What is RIPSTOP fabric?
ripstop fabrics are a textile fiber weaving technique that makes finished products more durable. During the weaving process, (coarse) reinforcing yarns interweave regularly in a cross-hatching pattern. The spacing is typically 5 to 8 millimeters (0.2 to 0.3 inches). Because the coarser yarns are interwoven within a thinner fabric, thin and lightweight rip-resistant fabrics have a two-dimensional structure. Older lightweight rip-resistant fabrics prominently display the coarser interlocking pattern within the material, but more modern weaving techniques make the rip lines less noticeable. A similar effect can be achieved by weaving two or three yarns together at smaller intervals.

If you examine a piece of ripstop fabric under a microscope, you'll immediately notice the clearly defined lines and even spacing. Then, if you look at a piece of material from a regular T-shirt, you'll find a significant decrease in brittleness and uniformity. The structure of a fabric is also influenced by its warp and weft yarns. Think of the warp as the fabric's filling, and the weft as the yarn in between. Ripstop refers to a weaving or sewing technique that reinforces the fabric through a specific checkered weave. Coarse fibers interwoven into the nylon fabric help make the ripstop fabric stronger and more durable than ordinary weaves. Ripstop fabrics are not only used in clothing but also in many other applications, such as hot air balloons, tents, bags and parachutes.
The name "Ripstop" might lead many to believe it prevents fabric from tearing altogether. That's true, but not entirely. While it helps prevent large tears, it doesn't completely eliminate them. Its real function is to prevent small tears and rips (unavoidable when wearing tactical clothing) from continuing to tear, spread, or enlarge.
If the fabric already has tears or holes, the ripstop's weave and its thick reinforcing yarns help prevent the tears from widening, and the mesh pattern ensures the tear doesn't exceed a few millimeters.

A Brief History of RIPSTOP fabric
The history of tear-resistant fabrics dates back to World War II, when Allied forces became increasingly concerned about the frequent tearing and destruction of silk parachutes. Desperate for a solution, DuPont Chemicals soon began researching tear-resistant fabric technology, thus solving the parachute problem.
By the 1960s, Louis Weiner and Harold Brandt saw the potential of tear-resistant fabrics in clothing and applied for a patent for them with the U.S. government.
Fast forward to the 1980s, and due to its durability and strength, ripstop fabrics were used in a variety of tactical gear, making them an ideal choice for military and other tactical-style clothing.
Today, it's easy to understand why major tactical clothing brands use some type of ripstop fabric, given its numerous advantages.
